⚡Magic in All the Right Places: Astrology & Harry Potter⚡

Updated: Feb 2, 2022

I wanted to take some time to talk about two of my most favorite forms of magic...

Astrology

AND

Harry Potter

Did you know that author of the Harry Potter books JK Rowling* not only knew of astrology, but actually had her hand in doing somethings with it too?

I KNOW. 🤯🤯🤯

One fact I learned that blew my mind was that JKR actually once hand wrote astrology charts! Check out this image:

*Disclaimer: I don't support the gender critical views of the author (JKR) discussed here.

This is a natal chart portfolio that JK Rowling built out in 1994 of which she drew out an accompanying cover book to match. We can see a full birthdate with a birth time which is definitely the mark of an astrologer. (More blatant astro knowledge to come below.) Also, it looks like she drew in some Venice vibes, so I am not sure if perhaps this person was born there or close to. We also see a peacock here, which is not closely linked to any zodiac sign, but in spirituality and animal totem magic peacocks are linked to resurrection and overcoming obstacles, so this may be indicative of some Scorpio. We definitely have evidence of some Libra and Leo energy in the cover art.

On this post from TheRowlingLibrary.com, its noted that this horoscope was "made specially for Roger Julian Tosswill, born on 13 October 1966, 11.05 PM." Here's a fun fact: if this individual was born in 1966 and she developed this in 1994, that means the person she was doing a natal chart for was 28, which is the start of our first Saturn return and often prime time most people do astrology seeking!

The auction lists that it is "a detailed interpretative reading, including of the sun sign, ascendant, ruling planets, significant conjunctions and oppositions, and their effect on character, personal strengths, possible careers, emotional and erotic characteristics, and compatibility with other signs, and a cover illustration depicting the chart’s key astrological symbols in pen, ink, and coloured pencil laid down on blue coloured card."

How COOL is that????

Considering that this document would be now 26+ years old(!) it isn't too surprising that my current day astrologer self would find some things a bit out of date. For example, she disregards Pluto, which is a sad thing. I have Pluto in my first house and its energy is VERY much there! She also stereotypes Saturn into its harsher aspects, and over time us astrologers have established his energy is, in fact, a lot more nuanced than that.

What's pretty cool is that she also works in references to other astrologer viewpoints in history, like how she does here: "Not only does he have the Sun and Moon in Libra, he also has Libra’s ruling planet, Venus, in the air sign of Aquarius. The 19th century astrologer John Varley wrote that “the aerial trigon, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, contains the humane, harmonious and courteous principles”, while the air signs are universally described as the most cerebral in the zodiac. All these qualities, as will be seen, are pronounced in Roger’s chart."

She also gives color, crystal, plant, animal, city and even country associations too. JKR has a stellium of Virgo energy in her chart, so she IS very precise and adept at high levels of detail and research.

Discovering this all was a treat for my Virgo astrologer eyes. JKR has a Moon in Virgo and I have always felt a close bond to her comeback story and work as a pioneering woman author (2020 onwards Twitter JKR not included). Not to mention, I am an avid Potterhead and grew up with the books. I was in London for the release of the last book!

JKR has her Sun in Leo, a naturally artistic and creative aspect, combined with the planet of hard work in Pisces (imagination, fantasy, dreams, illusions). She has the persistence and perseverance to apply herself to creativity and imagination. Many people don't realize that JKR was dreaming up sketches and fragments of her fantasy world for years and years before the book came out. Check out some of these magical sketches of hers:

And even more here.

This is the ultimate if you dream it, you can do it energy!

She has described getting visions while riding the London Underground (visions are very Neptunian, Pisces ruling planet), and her natal Neptune in Scorpio nicely trines down to her Saturn in Pisces (trine = same element and harmonious). Together this gives her the deep intuition combined with stamina and drive to apply herself to transformative creative work, particularly that of fantasy, magic, and the unseen. Harry Potter is most definitely all of those things!

Interestingly, the ultimate paradox of our own Saturn placement is that the very thing we find so easy to offer and do for others within that energy becomes our own scary sauce when we need to apply that medicine to ourselves. JKR has Saturn in Pisces conjunct Chiron, so she can get very caught up in being victimized (and in the process not deliver compassion, healing, and forgiveness). With her South Node in Sagittarius, of beliefs, she can really lose herself in deluded beliefs or misguided thinking at times too (a transit we as a collective are going through now with the nodes in Gemini and Sagittarius too). JKR really hurt many in the fandom with her exaggerated beliefs, and the jury is still out if she will make amends or not.

🐍Slytherin = 💧Water

🦡 Hufflepuff = 🌎Earth

Sirius Black - Sirius is a star system where many lightworkers come from

Arcturus - grandfather to Sirius and Regulus

Andromeda- the witch who married Ted Tonks, mother of Nymphadora Tonks, the Auror

Bellatrix - in constellation Orion, Sirius's cousin and omega mighty scary witch

Merope in the Pleiades (one of the original descending heirs to Slytherin via the Gaunt family who was neglected and abused but then fell in love with a Muggle)

Although, Professor Trelawney wasn't always "with it", we all love her just the same for her weirdness, her billowing shawls, too hot room, and lofty attitudes. One book moment that still makes me chuckle is here:

" I was saying, my dear, that you were clearly born under the baleful influence of Saturn,’ said Professor Trelawney, a faint note of resentment in her voice at the fact that he had obviously not been hanging on her words. ‘Born under – what, sorry?’ said Harry. ‘Saturn, dear, the planet Saturn!’ said Professor Trelawney, sounding definitely irritated that he wasn’t riveted by this news. ‘I was saying that Saturn was surely in a position of power in the heavens at the moment of your birth… your dark hair… your mean stature… tragic losses so young in life… I think I am right in saying, my dear, that you were born in mid-winter?’ ‘No,’ said Harry, ‘I was born in July.’ (GF13) "

Needless to say, JKR knew what she was doing in some ways, as she was cooking up names, associations, and astrology references in her fantasy world!

P.S. The years 1997-2000 were very potent periods for Harry Potter, and we can look back and see that these were heavy Aquarian times. Uranus - the planet that rules society, large groups of people, technologies, and astrology was transiting in Aquarius (its home sign). In 1997, the year the first book came out, we had Jupiter and Uranus both in Aquarius! All during the years of the late 1990s and early 2000s, we certainly had the awakening of people gathering together through technology and Harry Potter, to celebrate and come together. I know it was such an exciting time for me as a kid with daily updated Harry Potter fansites, fan theorizing chat rooms, and so much more!
